I was recently working with Alan Sawyers on Damp Proof North East’s website and he showed me what the site looked like on an iPad. It’s something I cater my designs too but it’s not something I specifically design for (unless asked).
I wonder how many businesses think about the how their website will be presented on mobile/handheld browsers? I assume the figures are still quite low % wise but I regularly have to load in the full website of a business when all I need (as I am on the move) is their phone number and/or address.
I think with the purchase of the iPad (along with my iPhone) I can now take into consideration this mobile aspect a bit more and hopefully provide my client’s customers with a better online experience.
There’s always the other option of creating an app for users to use, but if it’s a one off then having to download the app might be too much hassle and users may shy away.
I expect all big businesses to cater for the mobile community, but what should small/medium sized business and individuals do if they have a limited budget? Does anybody have any thoughts?

I recently shifted two non-mobile-compatible sites to new sites that look great on iPad and iPhone. It’s the way forward.
So do the sites detect it’s a mobile device and then display the site different or is the one design just catered for all environments?
The latter – detecting the device/browser would be your area! Next site?
